Not enough talent to be top 6 NHL, not enough of a grinder to be bottom 6 in the NHL.
Being a Caps and Bears fan, I love Sgarbs. He’s speedy and has good playmaking skills, but it’s extremely hard to break into a team’s top 6 if you aren’t elite and are undrafted/not a top prospect.
He’s a center and for years in DC (before this year) it’s been Kuzy and Backstrom. When he was in Anaheim it was Getzlaf and Kesler. And before that, Colorado, with Mac, Duchene, and RoR. Good luck.
Maybe in the right situation (being on a bad team or injuries), he coulda been a 50 point guy in the NHL. But he really didn’t light it up in the minors until he got to Hershey. By then he’s ~26 and not gonna get that shot.
Still, it seems bizarre that his teammate Beck Malenstyn became an everyday NHLer before him. Talent wise, he’s nowhere near Sgarbs. But team’s need that defensive/bottom 6/pk style of forward.
Fwiw, I’m pumped he’s getting this Caps run. Being he has to go through waivers, he should be up the rest of the season.
He’s one of those plays better than the stats suggest types but just hasn’t figured out how to translate his scoring to the speed of the NHL. His tools are good he skates well, good skill, plays both ways but at the end of the day if all of that isn’t translating to points you’re either a grinder 4C or going back to the AHL. I do like him a lot I have a feeling he’s going to be the Caps primary 4C next season.
