Hudon has always been criticized for his skating as he lacks the speed you would like to see in an undersized winger. Charles Hudon actually made improvements in his skating over the past season but he still lacks the separation speed and it was noticeable during this series. However, Hudon compensates his slow feet by using his elite hockey sense and slippery hands.
Hudon needs to work on his skating to improve his foot speed in order to be more efficient with the puck, especially in transition.
Making things more complicated, his skating is only average and speed wise, he doesn’t have that extra gear needed to buy himself some time and space on the ice. He definitely takes punishment on the ice because of he’s not quick enough to get out of the way, and that has to be a continued concern when it comes to injuries.
While Hudon’s skating needs work, The Dean’s List is very impressed with his ability to create offense with his quick hands and well-developed hockey sense
Due to his size, people tend to compare Hudon to Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis but the truth is that Hudon lacks St.Louis’ skating ability and a better comparison might be former Kitchener Ranger and current Buffalo Sabre forward Derek Roy. The biggest knock on Hudon is that his foot speed is average at best and skating ability has become a vital skill set that NHL scouts need to see in the “new NHL”. The similarities between Derek Roy and Charles Hudon appear to be more accurate as both players have the ability to create offense for themselves and linemates while only being average skaters.
He continues to be a scoring threat, utilizing his mix of crafty stick-work and ability to manoeuvre around traffic with ease. His array of different shots makes it hard for goaltenders to figure him out, and his ability to change speeds creates openings for both himself and his linemates.
The dynamic winger put up 66 points in 59 games and currently has eight points in nine playoffs games. He may be on the smaller side, but he possesses high-end offensive instincts and quick hands. He is a leader on his team, a great skater and excels on the power play
The one thing that stands out to me when watching Charles Hudon is his ability to spot openings on the ice and his capacity to take full advantage of them by his superior skating and puck handling ability
